Ethics - the right and wrong of decision making

First of all, the word “Ethics” is all about decision making to me. Whether one make the good or bad/ right or wrong decision for your organization or business.

Most of the companies/ organizations will introduce the right and appropriate ethics for the organization/ business as the fundamental work practice for their employees. Any new hired are compulsory to attend or go through the company policies/ code of conduct.

My current employer does emphasize the ethic values in our everyday working culture and it plays a major role to the employee in dealing with customers internally or externally.

From the articles and experience that i had, a lot of time we are in gray area in defining the right or wrong of ethics practices especially when we are be dealing with new projects/ invention/ design/ products/ organization/ business/ social awareness/ economy situation/ global culture and others. That’s some of the ethical challenges for an individual or the organization.

I would like to share an example of ethical challenge that related to Quality and Productivity.

Quality is an important factor in defining the standard of a product. With the recent economy recession that we faced, most companies will choose to go for low cost operation/ materials in order to sustain and produce mass production in the market industry.

Dealing with ‘low cost” is not easy and challenging for the business at the same time maintaining the quality of the end product.

We need to ensure low cost operation and material will not impact the quality to meet customer requirements and to gain long term customer trust in the industry. Also, the low cost material need to be compliance with the environmental protocol and conduct rules.

Therefore, tighter evaluation and qualification of the low cost processes/ materials are needed in dealing with this ethical challenge. Involvement from appropriate engineering functional group – Quality, Process & Product Engineering/ Procurement group are important (Important point – team work and responsibility).

A well documented evaluation with data collection will help in providing the fact and helps in decision making.

Data collection is another major challenge that related to productivity. Online based real time data collection system is required for analysis purposes and one need to be responsible in reporting the right data and fact for the benefit of the production and business.

A good analysis of the qualification will provide success to the company in cost saving and maximizing production with best quality operation.

Vice versa, wrong analysis or wrong qualification information will cause the company losses in money/ time and business opportunity.
